Israel/Gaza: latest community information
Message from Cantor Rachel Weston
- By Cantor Rachel Weston
We are living through a profoundly tragic moment for Israel and Gaza and I know we all feel heartbroken by the terrible loss of life. The news we are hearing is grim and the possibility of peace looks far away. At this time of grief and anxiety we must work hard to maintain our humanity and our hopefulness. Nearer to home, we're already seeing a rise in Antisemitism and Islamophobia on our streets, something we must all work to stop.
As the coming days unfold, let's hold each other close and pray for all who have lost loved ones or fear for their safety. And may peace, reconciliation and justice come speedily.
Community statements
We want to share with you some of the public statements being made by our communal organisations.
Firstly, here's a joint statement issued by the Assembly of Reform Rabbis and Cantors and Conference of Liberal Rabbis and Cantors.
The Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council have also released a joint response to the current events.
The Community Security Trust CEO Mark Gardener has recorded a short video setting out the work it is doing to keep us all safe.
The United Jewish Israel Appeal has launched the Israel at War Community Appeal. Funds raised will go to help victims of the current conflict and to support the Jewish Agency’s Victims of Terror fund that will provide critical support to those affected in the south.
Message from Leeds Jewish Welfare Board
Leeds Jewish Welfare Board recognises during this most difficult of times that members of the community may need to come together for mutual support and understanding of what they and their families may be facing.
We have opened a dedicated safe space, during opening hours, at the MAZCC for people to come together for emotional support. A member of our Community Support Services team will be on hand for guidance, support and signposting. For further information please call Reception on 0113 268 4211.
